Coach travel has become a popular alternative to the train with services to destinations throughout Germany and to other cities in Europe, which are often a cheaper alternative to rail travel.

The central bus station (Busbahnhof) of Dresden is located near the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). The biggest German coach provider is Flixbus https://global.flixbus.com/ . The German Autobahn known as Bundesautobahn (federal motorway) is one of the longest motorway networks in the world, stretching a total length of 13.000 kilometers. Due to this network drivers can travel fast and comfortably.

Nevertheless, the traffic situation in Germany may vary depending on the time of day and the season. There are sometimes traffic jams and road works, so it is wise to keep an eye on the actual traffic situation and plan the trip accordingly.

Dresden is accessible directly on three motorways. The A 4 approaches the city from the West (Cologne-Eisenach-Chemnitz) and East (Poland), and the A 13 from the North (Rostock-Berlin). The A 17 links the Saxon capital with Prague (Czech Republic). A dynamic car park information and guidance system directs drivers in Dresden to the nearest available car parking facility.

Anyone with an appropriate permit can drive in the country. You are not required to obtain an international driver’s license for a shorter stay in Germany. However, it may still prove useful as the German police or car rental staff may ask you for a German translation of the driver’s license. Just note that in most cases drivers must be over 18 or 21 years old to rent a car, just check with one of the car rental providers to verify that.
